Legenda

The Legenda series was founded in 1995 by Malcolm Bowie (1943-2007) with the aim of forming a new scholarly press in the humanities: one that would be governed by academics, would be open to interdisciplinary work, and would make available the results of advanced research by both new and established scholars. Under his dynamic leadership, Legenda formed partnerships with the Society for French Studies, the Modern Humanities Research Association, and the British Comparative Literature Association. Those ties are still firm today, just as many members of the original editorial board continue to serve.

The Legenda collection, published by Maney in association with the MHRA, consists of a number of series.

  • Main Series - with its distinctive blue cover, presents titles across a wide range of cultural topics.
  • Research Monographs in French Studies - selected and edited by the Society for French Studies. The series seeks to publish the best new work in all areas of the literature, thought, theory, culture, film and language of the French-speaking world.
  • Studies in Comparative Literature - produced in close collaboration with the British Comparative Literature Association, these titles range widely across comparative and theoretical topics in literary and translation studies.
  • Italian Perspectives - publishes books and collections of essays on any aspect and period of Italian literature, language, history, culture, politics, art, and media, as well as studies which take an interdisciplinary approach and are methodologically innovative.  The first eleven volumes are available from Maney here.
  • Studies in Linguistics - present monographs and collaborative volumes on a wide range of topics in linguistics, particularly European languages and their historical development. The series is also open to editions of texts illustrating aspects of language history.
  • Studies in Yiddish - embrace all aspects of Yiddish culture and literature. The series regularly publishes the proceedings of the International Mendel Friedman Conferences on Yiddish Studies, which are convened every two years by the European Humanities Research Centre of the University of Oxford.
  • Special Lecture Series - offers a selection of outstanding lectures by distinguished lecturers from across the disciplines on a variety of Humanities subjects.

These titles are all available to purchase from Oxbow Books (UK) and the David Brown Book Company (USA).
