Notes for Contributors - Annals of Tropical Medicine & Parasitology

Original papers in English will be considered for publication provided that they have not been published previously and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Following peer review, any submissions accepted will be subject to editorial revision.

Declaration. An article will be published only if the following declaration has been received from the senior author:

A submission should consist of one full paper copy, two sets of figures and an IBM-compatible diskette containing the relevant files. There should be one file for the text of the paper (i.e. the main text, tables - set using cells rather than tabs - and figure legends) and one for each of the figures. Any of the more common word-processing formats, such as WordPerfect or Word, should be used for the text file. The figure files should be in their original, fully editable format, such as Excel, SPSS, Harvard Graphics or Powerpoint. Greyscale or full-colour photographs should be sent only as hard copy. The signed declaration should accompany the submission.

Alternative Methods. Completely electronic submissions, sent by e-mail to the Editor will also be accepted.(krw@liv.ac.uk). Authors submitting articles electronically must also send the declaration and high-quality prints of any photographs by letter post; usually peer review will begin before the declaration and photographs reach the Editor. Authors without computing facilities may submit three full paper copies with no diskette but including the signed declaration. 

Original Articles. Hard copies should be printed on one side of A4 paper, left-justified and double-spaced. The first page should carry the title of the paper, the name(s) and addresses of the author(s) and, whenever possible, the fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author; failure to supply an e-mail address will delay publication. A short running title should also be supplied. An abstract of not more than 200 words summarizing the purpose and methods of the work, important findings and conclusions must be supplied on a separate sheet. The text, starting on a new page, should be divided under appropriate headings: INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS (or PATIENTS or ANIMALS) AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and REFERENCES; the RESULTS and DISCUSSION sections may be combined. In general, abbreviations should not be used without explanation the first time they occur and SI units should be used wherever possible. However, use of 'ml' is permitted and 2, DNA, ELISA, HPLC, IFAT, Ig, P, PCR, N, RAPD, RFLP, RNA, S.D., S.E. and v. (for versus) do not need expansion. The solidus (egg/g) is preferred to the superscript (eggs g-1). Tables should be printed on separate sheets and a heading for each must be provided; footnotes (if any) should be printed beneath the body of the table and vertical rules should be avoided. Entirely electronic submissions must follow the same guidelines. When preparing an article, it is worth looking at back copies of the Annals as these give a good idea of the journal's style. 

Short Communications are similar in style to Original Articles, except that authors' names and addresses should be given immediately before the References, no Abstract is necessary, all headings apart from REFERENCES are optional, and the list of references is kept short by omitting the titles of papers in journals and the titles of chapters in books. 

Illustrations. Figures and plates should be used only when necessary to illustrate particular structures or conditions, to summarize data or to record quantitative results. Photographs should be supplied as high-contrast, glossy prints. Special attention should be paid to the clarity of any line drawings or graphs, and , , , ,, and are the preferred symbols on line graphs. Units involving multiplication (e.g. eggs/g faeces x 10-3) should be avoided, either by converting the units (eggs/mg faeces) or by renumbering the relevant axis. Illustrations should be numbered in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Legends for illustrations should not appear on the illustrations themselves. Subject to editorial discretion, up to 16 pages of each issue may carry colour figures free of charge to the authors. 

References should be cited in the text in chronological order (e.g. Ree, 1998; Brown and Jones, 2000; Smith et al., 2001a) and listed in the REFERENCES in Harvard style:

Rejected manuscripts will not be returned to authors but held for 6 months before shredding. 
 
Eprints. Authors of papers in the Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology receive a screen-resolution PDF file of the published version. Orders for digital reprints may be made at the time proofs are distributed. A complete copy of the relevant journal issue will be sent about 3 weeks after publication.
