The Cartographic Journal (first published in 1964) is an established journal of record and comment containing authoritative articles and international papers on all aspects of cartography, the science, technology and art of presenting, communicating and analysing spatial relationships by means of maps and other geographical representations of the Earth's surface. This includes coverage of related technologies where appropriate, for example, remote sensing, geographical information systems (GIS), the Internet and global positioning systems. The Journal also publishes articles on social, political and historical aspects of cartography. As well as peer-reviewed 'refereed papers', authors are encouraged to submit material to the 'Observations' section. This section includes progress reports on specific projects, historical notes, technical matters, and personal reminiscences. Material from conferences, working parties, and workshops can be published as distinctively packaged collections under the title 'Survey' - especially where such material might not otherwise be published. The Journal reserves a section entitled 'Viewpoints' for invited papers by notable figures from the world of cartography. Each Volume of The Journal includes a Special Issue. Conference and workshop organizers are encouraged to contact the editorial team with potential contributions or proposals for Special Issues. The Journal also includes international cartographic news, recent book, atlas and software reviews, and a list of recent maps and atlases. It is published in full colour throughout, including colour illustrations within articles, as befits the subject matter. There is no cost to authors for colour reproduction of figures and plates.
Submission Procedure and File Requirements Articles must be submitted online at http://caj.edmgr.com. If you have not already done so, you will need to register to obtain a username and password. (Select the 'REGISTER' option from the main navigation bar at the top of the homepage.) Information on the submission procedure is provided online, but you will be asked to provide the information and files listed below. Failure to conform to these requirements may delay typesetting and publication of your paper. Authors will be asked to submit their work according to the requirements of the journal. For an initial submission you must upload: * a PDF file of the complete paper * OR a Word file containing the complete paper * OR a Word file containing the text, references, tables and figure captions plus an individual file of each figure, prepared to the specification laid out below. You will be asked to input separately the title, abstract and keywords for the article and contact details for all authors. This information may be cut and pasted. You must also download, complete and return the author agreement. Supplementary information such as datasets, animations, models or videos must be submitted offline, but you will need to indicate that an item of this type is being included in the submission. When submitting a revised article you must upload: * a text file containing the revised text, references, tables and figure captions, prepared to the specification described below. This file must not include graphics.
* a separate image file of each figure. Ensure that figures will be legible and comprehensible at final size and are of sufficiently high resolution (see guidelines below). Permitted file formats are TIFF (.tif), JPEG (.jpg) and EPS (.eps) * a response to the referees' comments, as a Word or PDF file * a passport-sized digital photo of the lead author * a short biography of the lead author (150 words) * a cover note detailing any specific requirements for layout and sizing of illustrations, e.g. single or double-column width (which the typesetters will endeavour to follow where practicable).
It is not necessary to upload, for a second time, files that were uploaded with the initial submission and have not been altered. However, please note that PDF is NOT an acceptable format for revised submissions. Text files and separate figure files are required in order not to delay publication should your article be accepted.
Conditions of Submission By submitting to The Cartographic Journal, authors acknowledge and accept that papers are considered for publication on the basis that: 1. the paper presents original work that is not being considered or reviewed by any other publication, and has not been published elsewhere in the same or a similar form; 2. all authors are aware of, and have consented to, the submission to The Cartographic Journal; 3. due regard has been paid to ethical considerations relating to the work reported; 4. the paper contains, to the best of the authors' knowledge, no libellous or unlawful statements.
Reviewing and Editorial Process The Editor-in-Chief will initially assess all original submissions, including those commissioned by the editorial team. Contributions considered relevant to the aims and scope of the journal and likely to be of publishable quality will be sent out for external review. The journal's policy is to obtain at least two independent reviews of each article. The peer review process will be double-blind, i.e. neither reviewers nor authors will be informed of the identity of each other. Referees will be encouraged to provide substantive, constructive reviews that provide suggestions for improving the work, and distinguish between mandatory and non-mandatory recommendations. The Editor-in-Chief will then make a decision about publication in the journal. He will inform the contributors in writing of his decision, and the reasoning behind it, and will provide contributors with copies of the external reviews. All manuscripts accepted for publication are subject to editing by the publisher for presentation, style and grammar. Any major redrafting is agreed with the author but the Editor's decision on the text is final.
Copyright It is a condition of publication that authors vest copyright in their articles, including abstracts, to The British Cartographic Society. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may use their article elsewhere after publication provided that prior permission is obtained from Maney Publishing Ltd (on behalf of The British Cartographic Society). Authors who wish to reproduce material from a previously published source must obtain written permission from the copyright holder (usually the Publisher) and the author(s) of the original material and send the letter granting this permission to Maney Publishing. A line giving the full source of the material should be included in the manuscript. If material from the author's own published work is to be used, permission must still be obtained from that Publisher.
Authors should also bear the following points in mind: 1. The title should be concise and reflect the subject matter. This should be followed by the Author's name and full address. An abstract of approximately 100 words should be included. 2. The paper should be in English. Long passages of text should be avoided by the appropriate use of sub-titles. 3. References, which should include only publications cited, should be referenced in the text, thus (Smith, 1988), and be listed alphabetically in the reference section conforming to the Harvard style: (i) References from journals: Fletcher, D. (1995) 'The Careswell Atlas, working tool and work of art', The Map Collector, 72, pp. 34-37. (ii) References from books: Holmes, N. (1992) Pictorial Maps, The Herbert Press, London. Bracken, I. (1994). 'Towards improved visualisation of socio-economic data', in Visualisation in Geographical Information Systems, ed. by Hearnshaw, H. H. and Unwin, D. J., pp. 76-84, Wiley, Chichester. (iii) References from the 'grey' literature: Smith, A. (1988). Colour photomapping. Report NRC-01- 512. National Research Centre. Ottawa, Canada. Please note that articles will be returned to Authors who do not conform to the Journal's referencing policy. Certain articles, especially those dealing with historical aspects, may well have to quote unpublished, archival or 'cumbersome' material, some of which may require further explanation in note form. In such cases referred material can be cited using numbered superscripts in the text and the list of references thus replaced by a section headed 'Notes' in which explanation of the superscripts is given. Material which has been consulted but not specifically referred to in the text can be included in a separate 'Bibliography'. Please note that references will not be checked by the Editor and the responsibility for the accuracy rests solely with the author(s). Proofs Proofs will be emailed, in PDF format, to the author nominated for correspondence. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs must be returned to the Editor within 48 hours of receipt along with a separate list of corrections via email to the Editor. Eprints Authors of papers in The Cartographic Journal receive a screen-resolution PDF file of the published version. This PDF may be forwarded to co-authors without separate permission being required from the publisher. The PDF cannot be used for commercial purposes. The Cartographic Journal must be cited as the original source of publication and a link to www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney/caj included with any listing. This PDF may be posted on authors' individual websites or that of their institution. Authors are entitled to make copies of the article for reasonable personal use only. Authors may still purchase printed offprints if desired; an offprint order form will be forwarded to the corresponding author with their PDF proofs. Editor:
