Scope Interdisciplinary Science Reviews aims to set contemporary and historical developments in science and technology in their wider social and cultural context. It is concerned with illuminating the interrelations of science and technology with other forms of human creativity and experience. ISR provides an open forum for contributors from across the physical, biological, social and historical sciences, from the arts and from the humanities. Approaches that fall outside traditional intellectual categories or that transcend boundaries of subject or method are particularly encouraged. Tables of contents, abstracts and some free content may be found at www.ingentaconnect.com/content/maney/isr.
Contributions ISR publishes contributions in three broad categories. Papers may be anything up to ten thousand words in length, with notes and references as appropriate. Essays are shorter pieces and need not be referenced. Book reviews are mostly no more than two thousand words long. Proposals for contributions are welcome at any time. Since many issues of the journal are themed, unsolicited submissions should be in summary or draft form.
Submission Authors will be expected to supply an electronic version of their final text in Word or a compatible format. Email submission is preferred, except for illustrations with very large file sizes, when a CD ROM should be supplied. Hard copy is not required.
Formatting In preparing the electronic version, formatting should be kept to a minimum. Spacing, punc-tuation and spelling should be consistent, and italic or bold type should be used only where essential. Manuscripts should include a synopsis, and about 100 words of biographical information on each author.
Notes All notes and literature references should be presented in a single sequence, numbered serially. Citations in the text should appear as superscript characters outside any punctuation marks, thus.32 Journal titles should be given in full. References to books should give year and place of publication as well as publisher. Book references should be set out in the form: A. E. Shapiro: 'Newton's experiments on diffraction and the delayed publication of the Opticks', in Isaac Newton's Natural Philosophy, (ed. J. Z. Buchwald and I. B. Cohen), 47-76, at 53; 2000, Cambridge, MA, MIT Press, and journal references as: R. W. Sherman: 'Sound insulation in apartments', Architectural Forum, 1930, 53, 373-378, at 373.
Illustrations
Policy on colour Barring the exceptions below, all illustrations must be suitable for reproduction in black and white. Limited use of colour in the printed journal may be possible at the Editors’ discretion: otherwise colour is available in print only if the author is prepared to pay the additional cost of colour reproduction. Colour illustrations will carried free in the online version of the journal, where this enhances the information being presented, provided the figures involved are supplied in the correct electronic format (see below). For these figures, two separate files must be supplied, optimised for black and white and colour reproduction respectively.
High quality illustrations that enhance or complement the impact of the text are welcome. All illustrations must be suitable for reproduction in black and white. The journal column width is 32 picas (13½ centimetres). Where possible electronic versions of photographs should be supplied, each as a separate tiff or jpeg file with a resolution of at least 300 dpi at the intended size of reproduction (please do not save at the default screen resolution of 72 or 96 dpi). Line drawings should be supplied either as high quality printouts or as eps files of at least 800 dpi resolution at final size.
Permissions Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any material or illustrations for which they do not hold copyright.
Proofs Proofs will be supplied in pdf format by email, and authors are requested to deal with them promptly. They should be checked thoroughly, and clear details of any essential corrections supplied, preferably by email. Alterations at proof stage are expensive and should be avoided wherever possible.
Copyright Authors must transfer copyright in papers as published to the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Published papers may be posted on personal websites, provided copyright is acknowledged, the correct citation is given, and a link is provided to the ISR homepage, www.maney.co.uk/journals/isr.
E-prints Authors receive a screen-resolution pdf file of the published version of their paper as well as a copy of the complete issue in which it appears. Orders for printed offprints may be made on the form supplied at the time proofs are distributed.
