1. Contributions should be sent to the Editor at 102 Sorrento Road, Dalkey, Co. Dublin, Republic of Ireland. If accepted, authors will be expected to supply the final version of their article in both hard copy and on 3.5 disk in PC format, using Word. Disks must be clearly labelled with the author’s name, title of the file, and format and software used. Text should not be justified; use hard returns only at the end of paragraphs; indents at start of paragraphs should be indicated by a single tab not multiple spaces; switch o. auto-hyphenation and avoid automatic footnote and endnote programs as they cause problems for the typesetter. Endnotes should be typed at the end of the text, or supplied in a separate file. Tables should be keyed horizontally from left to right using a tab between columns, not the space bar, or keyed inWord’s Table mode. Contributors are asked to pay particular attention to conciseness; the costs of printing are such that each issue of the Quarterly has to be kept to a maximum number of pages. While no strict limit of length is imposed, shorter articles stand a much better chance of being published soon. The Editor will not normally accept for publication articles which have appeared in substantially the same form elsewhere, whether in English or in another language.
2. References should be given in the form: (Brown 1974, 116), with a bibliography in alphabetical order at the end of the article. If footnotes are essential, they should be employed solely for the purpose of giving reference information; they should not include discussions which belong in the text. Footnotes will be printed at the end of the article.
3. Styling. The current style of the Quarterly should be followed closely. Bibliographical references should be given according to the pattern adopted; journal titles abbreviated in the standard forms except where reference is made to a rare or little-known journal. Reference may conveniently be made to the Modern Humanities Research Association Style Guide 2002, obtainable from Maney Publishing, Hudson Road, Leeds LS9 7DL, England. Price £5.00 (overseas £6.00). Transliteration of non-Roman scripts should follow normally adopted styles. Non-Roman scripts will be printed only if this is absolutely essential.
4. Illustrations. Images can be supplied in electronic format but files must be accompanied by hard copy output. Images must be supplied as ti. or eps files saved at minimum input scanning resolution of 350–400 dpi for half tones, 800 dpi for simple line and 1200 dpi for fine line. Jpeg files will not be accepted. For hard copy artwork supplied for scanning photographs should be good black-and-white prints and line drawings should be in strong outline for clear reproduction. Always indicate the author’s name and short title with figure number on the reverse. Any desired groupings, sizings and scale reductions should be given where possible, otherwise this is at the editor’s discretion. An accompanying list of captions should be supplied on disk and as hard copy. The editor reserves the right to ask for a reduction in the number of illustrations.
5. Proofs. Contributors will receive first proofs of their articles. The editor will be responsible for the second proofs. Corrections other than of printer’s errors may be disallowed or charged to the contributor.
6. OVprints. Contributors will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which the article appears and twenty free offprints (shared between contributors in the case of joint authorship).
7. Reviews. Books for review should be sent to the Reviews Editor: Ashley Jones, Palestine Exploration Fund, 2 Hinde Mews, Marylebone Lane, London W1U 2AA. Reviewers are asked to adhere strictly to the heading style as this appears in the Quarterly and to submit copy on disk as detailed above. The Review editor’s suggestions about length must be observed and, if appropriate, a shorter rather than a longer review should be submitted. If a book is marginal to the area of the Quarterly’s concern, or if only parts of it are relevant, this should be made clear in the review and the discussion restricted. If a book is of little value or its relevance very limited, a notice of a few lines only should be submitted. Notes of errors are better sent to the publishers than included in a review, except where a particular error undermines the sense of the book or where a book is so badly printed as to make it less than useful. The Review editor reserves the right to cut reviews which are of excessive length. No proofs are sent to reviewers. Reviewers will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which the review appears. Since 1865 the PEF has been a resource for scholars and students with an interest in the Levant. Central to the Fund’s role as a research facility are the wonderful and very distinctive archives and collections which are used by scholars from a wide range of academic disciplines on a regular basis. The archives include excavation journals and records, photographs, plans, maps, paintings, and drawings by scholars, explorers, and other individuals who have worked for the PEF, or who have generously donated their valuable research to its permanent care. Official and occasionally personal correspondence of significant individuals is also included in these archives, which are invaluable for the historian and biographer. The Fund also holds a diverse collection of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts, ranging in date from the Middle Paleolithic to the early twentieth century. The collection of preserved flora and fauna from the Levant is yet another facet of what the PEF has to offer. These collections will be useful to people with varied interests — especially archaeology, anthropology, geology, and cartography—in the holy land. The archives and collections are available for study to all members of the Fund. Modern prints of images from our photographic and picture archive are available to order.
