Notes for Contributors - Romance Studies

Romance Studies welcomes original contributions that match the aims and scope of the journal (as described on the inside front cover) on the understanding that their contents have not previously been published nor currently submitted for publication elsewhere. Each issue is concerned (but not exclusively) with a specific theme; articles on subjects other than the selected topic are also welcome. All submissions will be sent to independent referees. It is a condition of publication that papers become the copyright of Swansea University.

All editorial correspondence and contributions should be addressed to:

Dr Sarah Bowskill (email: romancestudies@swansea.ac.uk), School of European Languages, Swansea University, Singleton Park, Swansea SA2 8PP, UK (fax: +44 (0) 1792 295978).

Submissions originating in North America may be sent to Dr Elizabeth Emery, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Montclair State University, 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07043, USA.

Deadlines

Deadlines are normally May for the January issue, September for the April issue, November for the July issue, and March for the November issue.

Presentation and Style

Romance Studies publishes articles of circa 6,000 words. All pages should be numbered. The second page should repeat the title and contain an abstract in English of not more than 200 words. This abstract should not reprise verbatim the opening paragraph of the article, over which it will appear.

Electronic submissions are preferred: an email attachment (MS Word) should contain an anonymized version of the article; contact information should be listed in the body of the message. Otherwise, three complete (anonymized) hard copies may be submitted, printed double-spaced with ample margins. The first page should state only the title of the paper, name(s) of the author(s) and, for each author, a short institutional affiliation and an abbreviated title (for running headlines within the article). At the bottom of the page give the full name and address to which all correspondence, including proofs, should be sent.

Contributors should follow the MHRA Style Guide (ISBN 0-947623-62-0) and the house-style of the journal. Words should not be hyphenated at the end of a line. Use single inverted commas for short quotations (double for quotations within quotations), but quotations over 50 words should be indented and single-spaced without inverted commas. In the case of articles written in English, translations are not generally needed for quotations from the Romance languages. Where a passage presents particular difficulty, translation may be offered either in parentheses in text, or in an endnote. Quotations in languages other than Romance will require translation. Non-English words in the text, apart from names, should be italicized.

Notes and References

Contributors should adhere to MHRA and the journal's house-style in the presentation of numbered endnotes (not footnotes) and references. Any general note on the article (e.g. personal acknowledgements) should appear as a first un-numbered note. Within the text, references and notes should be indicated by a superscript Arabic numeral. Articles and publications cited in the text should then be listed in full in the Notes section at the end of the article as follows:

for books:

Debra Linowitz Wentz, Fait et fiction: les formules pédagogiques des 'Contes d'une grand-mère de George Sand' (Paris: Nizet, 1985), p. 9.

for articles in books:

Luis T. González-del-Valle, 'Lo interpersonal en Presentimiento de lobos: un estudio de los modos de transmisión', in Estudios en honor de Ricardo Gullón, ed. by Luis T. González-del-Valle and Darío Villanueva (Lincoln, NE: Society of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies, 1984), pp. 141-53.

for periodical articles:

Maurizio Perugi, 'James Sully e la formazione dellíestetica pascoliana', Studi di Filologia Italiana, 42 (1984), 225-309.

For particular text(s) repeatedly cited, full bibliographical reference should be given in an initial endnote, with author/date/page references thereafter in parentheses in the text (Perugi 1984: 230). Consistent abbreviations may be used in such references where appropriate. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of references.

Tables and Illustrations

These should be submitted on separate sheets, repeating on the back the title of the paper, and numbered sequentially using Arabic numerals for Figures (illustrations, i.e. photographs, diagrams and graphs) and Roman numerals for Tables. Each must have a caption, source and where appropriate, key. The position in the text must be clearly shown (e.g. Figure 1, Table IV). Images can be supplied as black and white prints of photographs, or in electronic format, but files must be accompanied by hard copy output. Images must be supplied as .tiff or .eps files saved at minimum input scanning resolution of 350-400 dpi for halftones, 800 dpi for simple line, and 1200 dpi for fine line drawings. Captions should be submitted on a separate sheet. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted images in Romance Studies and for submitting said permission to the journal's Editors.

E-mail Submission

On notification by the Editors that a paper has been accepted, a final version of the article should be submitted preferably via e-mail or on disk or CD-ROM in MS Word. If the latter, the filename and software must be clearly indicated.

In preparing the electronic version, there is no need to format articles. References and captions should be placed at the end of the file. Please use hard returns only at the end of paragraphs, switch auto-hyphenation off, and do not justify text. Consistency in spacing, punctuation, and spelling will be of help. Tables should be submitted as separate files and keyed horizontally from left to right using a tab between columns, not the space bar (or keyed in Table mode in Word).

Proofs

Proofs will be sent as PDF files via e-mail to the author nominated for correspondence. It is therefore important to notify the editors of your contact email with your final submission. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision, alteration or changes to illustrations, which will not be allowed. Proofs must be returned to the Editor within 72 hours.

Eprints

Authors of papers in Romance Studies receive a screen-resolution PDF file of the published version. Orders for digital offprints may be made at the time proofs are distributed
