PRESS RELEASE

Maney acquires Earthscan heritage list

Maney Publishing has purchased two journals, Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites and Public Archaeology, and a list of heritage books from Earthscan/James & James, (Science Publishers) Ltd.

Maney has the largest list of online archaeology journals of any British publisher in the field. The new acquisitions will compliment and expand on Maney's existing titles such as the Journal of the British Archaeological AssociationEnvironmental Archaeology and Vernacular Architecture. The new titles will join the Maney Online Research E-journals (MORE) History and Humanities Collection.

Michael Gallico, Managing Director of Maney Publishing, is delighted with the acquisitions: “These two journals will be an asset to our renowned humanities list as they will be our first journals dedicated to conservation studies and the archaeology profession, and we look forward to working with the Editors to ensure a smooth transition. The book list adds a new dimension to our archaeology series.”

Edward Milford, Chairman of Earthscan/James & James, said: “We are sure that these journals and books will enjoy a bright future with Maney as they are experienced publishers of archaeology titles, with all the specialist knowledge that is required of publishing in this field.”

Conservation and Management of Archaeological Sites was launched in 1995 and is the only journal that covers both theoretical and practical issues in archaeological site conservation. Produced in association with the ICCROM, International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property in Rome, the journal features papers on such topics as:

  • Historical documentation and condition reporting of sites
  • Analysis of deterioration and environmental monitoring of sites
  • Stabilization and reburial of archaeological sites

Key issues covered include:

  • Sale of unprovenanced and frequently looted antiquities
  • Representation of archaeology in the media
  • Law on portable finds or treasure troves

The journal is edited by Charles Neal Ascherson. Ascherson studied History at King's College Cambridge under the tutelage of Eric Hobsbawn. After receiving a triple-starred First he worked for the Manchester Guardian, The Scotsman, The Observer and the Independent on Sunday. He is the author of many books including The King Incorporated, The Polish August, The Nazi Legacy and Stone Voices.
