Maney Publishing is a long-established publisher and distributor of academic journals. The company was founded in 1900 and now produces journals in science, medicine, and the humanities and social sciences. The range of our titles can be seen on our web site (www.maney.co.uk). We manage 20,000 subscriptions to over 60 journals annually, deal with all the main subscription agents (such as EBSCO, Swets and Blackwell) and with over 100 smaller agents, including many in India and Japan.

Maney Publishing operates in association with Beijing Charlesworth Software Development Co Ltd (BCSD) (a member of The Charlesworth Group). Through this connection we can now offer publishers in China who wish to sell the printed version of their English language journals an efficient means of processing subscriptions from libraries, agents, and individuals outside China. Once subscribers outside China see that there is an easy route to purchasing important research published in China it will be possible to increase the readership of your publication.

A. Maney Publishing will:

1. Set the subscription rate in US dollars for your journal. This rate will be in line with the cost of similar journals published in Europe and America. We would set a special reduced rate for individuals (50% of the standard rate) to encourage more subscriptions.

2. Handle all orders for your journal; enter subscribers on to our database; despatch issues of your journal to subscribers when published; issue renewal notices for each subsequent year. We would use air-speeded mail to send the issues.

3. Collect all subscription money and send you a percentage of all revenue. We would pay the publisher in US dollars.

4. At 31 December each year send you a complete list of the names and addresses of all paid subscribers in that year.

5. Create a separate page on our web site describing your journal and the subscription details. We will link this site to your own site if required.

6. Store issues of the journal in our warehouse.

7. It is normal practice to give a subscription agent who sends an order with payment a discount of 5% on the subscription rate. We would do so.

8. We would create a special name and postal box number to identify clearly your journal separately from our own titles.

B. You, the journal's publisher will:

1. Send to BCSD office in Beijing ten (10) copies of each issue, free of charge, to supply the first 10 subscribers. If the number of subscriptions rises to more than 10 Maney will request and the publisher will send additional copies free of charge.

2. Give Maney Publishing's special name and address, and the US dollar price, in the journal's copyright page and in all advertisements, leaflets and order forms.

3. Give Maney Publishing exclusive rights to handle all subscriptions outside China. It will cause great confusion if another distributor in China or in Europe or America is also handling orders outside China.

4. Send directly any free copies of your journal required by indexing and abstracting services such as the Institute for Scientific Information, Chemical Abstracts or Index Medicus, etc. The publisher will also send all free copies to members of the Editorial Board, Advisory Panel and similar.

5. Advise Maney Publishing of the correct means for transferring to the publisher its share of revenue under A3 above.

C. Costs

No payment is required in advance for this service. Maney Publishing will charge an agreed percentage of all subscription revenue taken. Out of that we will pay all postage and processing costs. There will be a single "start up" charge to set up the database for your journal and create the web site. That charge would be deducted from the first payment due to you.

D. Contract

Maney Publishing would produce a contract based on a minimum of two years, to be signed on behalf of the publisher by an officially authorised person. The contract could be cancelled by either party with at least six months' notice in advance, to end at 31 December of that year. If not cancelled it will automatically renew for one year every year. The contract will be subject to English law. The publisher must guarantee that no material in the journal is in breach of copyright. The contract will automatically prevent you from entering into a similar contract with any other distributor.
